Getting to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Located in the southwestern region of Kampala, in the district of Kisoro, Mgahinga is the second best national to do gorilla trekking after the famous Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. Mgahinga has got one habituated gorilla family opened to trekkers for gorilla trekking. Besides Gorillas, the park also boosts with a variety of other attractions with wide range of activities to be done in the park. The park offers other activities such as golden monkey tracking, bird watching, Batwa community trail where you will encounter the long inhabitants of the forest. The Batwa where the first inhabitants who lived and survived in the forest before the establishment of the national park whereby many of them where displaced but the few that remained behind, settled around the park boarders.
There are many options to choose from and get to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the park is accessible by road from the nearby Kisoro town, about 14kms away. If you are in Kisoro, you can hire a car (taxi) to take you to the Mgahinga park entrance. You also inquire from the locals and they will give you directions to the park.
Transport from Kampala to Mgahinga National Park
The drive distance from Kampala/ Entebbe to Mgahinga covers about 508km and the drive time, lasts for approximately 9-10 hours. Therefore, safaris to Mgahinga and Bwindi must be planed accordingly. Kampala’s drive to Kisoro/Mgahinga will take you through major south western Uganda towns such as Masaka, Mbarara, and Kabale, the route takes through Equator line crossing where you will have an opportunity to stand in the southern and northern hemisphere at the same time. The equator is situated in town called “Kayabwe.” The other option is taking a bus/ public service from Kampala capital connecting from Kampala-Mgahinga route arriving to Kisoro then you will take a taxi up to the park headquarters.
Transport from Kigali to Mgahinga National Park
The simplest option is driving from Kigali city in Rwanda to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park takes about 4-5hours. The drive time is much shorter compared to Kampala to Mgahinga. The road trip to Mgahinga will take you through Musanze town in northern Rwanda and cross Uganda via the Cyanika border. From Cyanika, you continue to Kisoro town then proceed to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park headquarters.
Flight from Entebbe Airport to Kisoro Airport
There are daily flights starting from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro Airport. If you opt for the fly-in option to Kisoro airport we can make these arrangements for you to fly from Entebbe to Kisoro airstrip and our company repetitive/ guide will pick you up and transfer you to the park. The daily flights between Entebbe and Kisoro are provided by Aero Link Uganda. This is fastest and less tiresome compared to road transport but still the experience on road transport is worth it.
